IEEE/ACM DS-RT 2017

Social event

The social event organized within the conference consists of a visit to the roman astronomical observatory, followed by a dinner in the suggestive "Roman castles" area.

Below are some details about the chosen locations.

Osservatorio Astronomico Romano (OAR)

OAR

The Rome Observatory was founded in 1938, in the site of Villa Mellini in Monte Mario in Rome.
In the same period, a new observatory in Monteporzio Catone was built to house a big refractor. The Second World War put an end to the project.
In 1948, the Monteporzio building was assigned to the Observatory of Rome.
Since 1988, the OAR astronomers have been working at the Monteporzio site, which offers a suitable structure for the development of scientific activities. This location also houses the Astronomical Divulgation Laboratory (open to the public), and the Monte Porzio Telescope where students and astronomy appassionate may interact with this beautiful science. In the Monte Mario structure remains the Astronomical and Copernican Museum and the Solar Tower, while the main building is reserved to central INAF administration activity.
The Observatory of Rome used to be an independent Institute of the Minister of Education and Research (MIUR), until the National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) was established, in 2002. Now it is one of the 20 Astronomical Observatories and Institutes of INAF.
The OAR is characterized by a broad cultural interest in a variety of fields, ranging from the Solar System to the Distant Galaxies and the Universe as a whole.

Enoteca Poggio Le Volpi

OAR

Following the business inclination of the father Armando, Felice Mergè brings forward his inner love for winemaking and family values. So the 1996 sees the start of the estate Poggio le Volpi in Monte Porzio Catone. Thanks to Felice’s inspiration and fantasy in the wine production, the company soon enters the circle of the most interesting winemaking companies in terms of production in the Lazio region, achieving high appreciation amongst the national and international niche wine lovers.
The philosophy of Poggio le Volpi is to valorize the ampelographic richness of the land and to combine the values of the tradition with the passion for innovation and the wine making experimentation.
The land covers a surface of volcanic soil with predominantly noon orientated vertical trills. They are hectares of land cultivated with traditional grapes such as Malvasia, Malvasia di Candia and Trebbiano, contributing to the production of Poggio le Volpi refined wines: very high quality products made with the most advanced techniques but always respectful of the traditions for what concerns tipicality and territorial designations. Next to the estate there is a cellar equipped with the most advanced instruments for the winemaking and aging of the product.
