IEEE/ACM DS-RT 2017

Welcome Message

A warm welcome to the 21st IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Distributed Simulation and Real-Time Applications (DS-RT 2017), held this year in Rome, Italy.

Rome is the capital of Italy and caput mundi, one of the most beautiful cities in the world and the one with the richest cultural and architectonic heritage, that bears witness to almost three thousand years of history.

DS-RT serves as a forum for simulationists from academia, industry and research labs, for presenting recent research results that target the growing overlap between large distributed simulations and real time applications. A total of 50 papers have been submitted, of which 23 have been accepted selected for presentation and publication as regular papers. The program is completed by 6 short papers, 2 demo papers and one tutorial. The accepted papers this year are grouped into the following sessions: Multicore Platforms, Large-scale Simulations, HLA-based Modeling and Simulation, Network and Cloud Simulation, Agent-based Modeling and Simulation, Simulation in/of Intelligent Transportation Systems, Distributed Simulations of Distributed Systems and Real-Time Systems.

This year program opens with a keynote speech on “Discrete-Event Modeling and Simulation for Development of Embedded and Real-Time Systems”, given by Prof. Gabriel Wainer from the Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. A second relevant keynote speech on “Cores, threads, objects: re-knead all for a new generation PDES” will be given by Prof. Francesco Quaglia from University of Rome Tor Vergata.

In keeping with the DS-RT tradition, a Best Paper Committee (chaired by Andrea D’Ambrogio) will select the DS-RT 2017 Best Paper Award from the most highly ranked papers by reviewers. The Best Paper Award last year went to "A Lock-Free O(1) Event Pool and its Application to Share-Everything PDES Platforms", authored by Romolo Marotta and Mauro Ianni (DIAG - Sapienza, Italy); Alessandro Pellegrini (Sapienza University of Rome, Italy); Francesco Quaglia (University of Rome "La Sapienza", Italy). The candidates for this year's best paper are (in no particular order):

  • A Non-blocking Global Virtual Time Algorithm with Logarithmic Number of Memory Operations, Mauro Ianni and Romolo Marotta (DIAG – Sapienza University of Rome, Italy); Alessandro Pellegrini (Sapienza University of Rome, Italy); Francesco Quaglia (University of Rome Tor Vergata, Italy)
  • Parallel Sort-Based Matching for Data Distribution Management on Shared-Memory Multiprocessors, Moreno Marzolla and Gabriele D'Angelo (University of Bologna, Italy)
  • HOLEG: a Simulator for Evaluating Resilient Energy Networks based on the Holon Analogy, Rolf Egert, Carlos Garcia Cordero, Andrea Tundis, and Max Mühlhäuser (TU-Darmstadt , Germany)

The Best Paper Award will be announced during the conference.

Many individuals and institutions have contributed to the success of this leading modeling and simulation conference. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the members of organization, steering and program committees, and all authors for their invaluable contributions, effort, and time. Special thanks also go to our sponsors, IEEE Computer Society and ACM SIGSIM, and to the editorial staff at IEEE Conference Publication Services for their work in producing this proceedings. Thanks to the “Centro di Competenza ICT SUD” and its staff for the management of all the administrative aspects of the conference.

“All roads lead to Rome” is typically said to mean that all the methods of doing something will achieve the same result in the end. We are confident that this year symposium will be as successful as the previous editions.

On behalf of the DS-RT’17 Organization Committee we welcome you to Rome and we hope you will enjoy both the program and the venue!
